It published a special report titled “Growing Smarter: Planning for a Bay Area of 9 Million,” produced in collaboration with Cage lab at UC Berkeley’s geography department, Earth Island Journal, and Bay Nature Magazine. This fact spurs questions about the type of growth we will see and whether there will be a suburban sprawl. We have a growing population and – especially in San Francisco – limited space.

The area continues to attract investors and remains in high demand among buyers of all ages.Here in the Bay Area, “growth” has a very literal meaning. In fact, 43.39 percent of the homeowners in the suburb have resided in the area for 11 years or more. Today, Oranjezicht is a sought-after suburb that many have chosen to call home. Oranjezicht remained a working farm for the next two centuries and many of the original farm buildings along with the old slave bell can still be found in Oranjezicht today.Īs the city of Cape Town grew and more settlers arrived, the area saw vast development. The property was so named due to the good view it provided of the orange bastion of the Castle of Good Hope.Īfter Laubscher’s death, the farm was bought by Pieter van Breda, a Dutchman who had arrived in the Cape during 1719. He named his farm Oranjezicht, which translated means orange view. Originally farm land, it is said that the area was purchased in 1708 by Nicolaus Laubscher, a Swiss countryman who had immigrated to the Cape in 1670. R1.5 million represented 22 percent of all sales between May 2012 and April 2013, while properties priced between R400 000 and R800 000 accounted for 19 percent of sales concluded from May 2012 to April 2013. Properties sold within the R1.5 million to R3 million price category from May 2012 to April 2013 represented 29 percent of the total sales during that time. These properties accounted for approximately 30 percent of all the properties sold during this period. He says the most popular properties sold in the area between May 2012 and April 2013 were those priced above the R3 million mark. Goslett says out of 5 460 suburbs nationwide, Oranjezicht ranked 64th in terms of the average valuation of a freehold property and was ranked 26 out of 641 suburbs within the Western Cape. The average price of a sectional title unit in 2007 was around R1.017 million, this year it is slightly higher at R1.018 million. The average price of a sectional title unit has remained fairly stable from the height of the property boom in 2007, dipping slightly in 2010. The price dropped once again in 2012 to R3.613 million but is currently sitting at around R4.255 million. However, prices recovered, reaching a record high of R5.075 million in 2011. This home offers eight bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a swimming pool and garage. Only around 1.93 percent of Oranjezicht property is situated within estates. Property in Oranjezicht is fairly equally divided between sectional title units and freestanding homes, with 57.55 percent of all property being sectional title and 40.52 percent freestanding homes. Each group is responsible for around 36.13 percent of the recent buying activity in the area. He notes that the two most active groups of recent buyers are those aged between 18 and 35, along with those aged between 36 and 49 years old. The suburb is also ideally placed in relation to the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, with Camps Bay and Clifton only a stone’s throw away on the other side of the mountain.Īdrian Goslett, CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, says buyers have been active in Oranjezicht in recent months with sales transactions having grown by a massive 50 percent when comparing year-on-year figures from the same period last year.
